Install Oplinque as an App

Oplinque is a Progressive Web App (PWA), which means you can install it on your device for a native-like experience, including limited offline viewing, faster loading, and easy access from your home screen or desktop.

Benefits of Installing

  • Smart Caching - Some API responses may be cached for up to a day (NetworkFirst strategy)
  • App Experience - Works like a native desktop/mobile app

Note on Offline Use: The app uses smart caching to show previously loaded content when offline. However, creating, editing, or deleting data requires an internet connection. Think of it like viewing downloaded content - you can read, but can't make changes until back online.


Desktop Installation

Chrome, Edge, Brave (Chromium-based browsers)

  1. Open Oplinque in your browser at https://oplinque.com
  2. Look for the install icon in the address bar (⊕ or computer icon)
  3. Click "Install" or "Install Oplinque"
  4. Confirm in the popup dialog
  5. Done! The app will open in its own window

Alternative method:

  • Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right
  • Select "Install Oplinque..." or "Apps" → "Install this site as an app"

Keyboard shortcut:

  • Windows/Linux: Press Ctrl + Shift + A (on some browsers)
  • macOS: Press Cmd + Shift + A (on some browsers)

Firefox (Desktop)

Firefox desktop doesn't support PWA installation natively. Use Chrome, Edge, or Brave for the best experience.

Workaround:

  • Use Firefox's "Add to desktop" feature for a bookmark shortcut
  • Or use a Chromium-based browser for full PWA support

Safari (macOS)

  1. Open Oplinque at https://oplinque.com
  2. Click "File" in the menu bar
  3. Select "Add to Dock"
  4. Adjust the name if desired
  5. Click "Add"

The app will appear in your Dock for quick access.


Mobile Installation

iPhone & iPad (Safari)

  1. Open Oplinque in Safari at https://oplinque.com
  2. Tap the Share button (square with arrow pointing up) at the bottom
  3. Scroll down and tap "Add to Home Screen"
  4. Edit the name if you want (default: "Oplinque")
  5. Tap "Add" in the top-right corner
  6. Done! The app icon will appear on your home screen

Tips:

  • The icon will look like a native app on your home screen
  • Launch it like any other app - it opens in full screen without Safari UI
  • Works offline once installed

Android (Chrome, Edge, Samsung Internet)

  1. Open Oplinque at https://oplinque.com
  2. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮) in the top-right
  3. Select "Install app" or "Add to Home screen"
  4. Tap "Install" in the popup
  5. Done! The app will be added to your home screen and app drawer

Alternative prompt:

  • You may see an "Install" banner at the bottom
  • Tap "Install" on the banner
  • Confirm in the dialog

Tips:

  • The app appears in your app drawer alongside other apps
  • You can uninstall it like any other app (long-press → App info → Uninstall)
  • May support background sync and push notifications depending on the browser

Android (Firefox)

  1. Open Oplinque at https://oplinque.com
  2. Tap the three-dot menu (⋮)
  3. Select "Install" or "Add to Home screen"
  4. Tap "Add" to confirm
  5. Done! Icon added to home screen

Verifying Installation

Desktop

  • Check your Start Menu (Windows) or Applications folder (macOS)
  • Look for Oplinque in your installed apps list
  • The app should open in its own window (no browser tabs)

Mobile

  • Find the Oplinque icon on your home screen
  • Tap to launch - should open full screen without browser UI
  • Check Settings → Apps (Android) or home screen (iOS) to confirm

Managing the Installed App

Updating

PWAs are updated by the browser, often in the background. Updates may apply when you reopen the app.

Manual update (if needed):

  • Close and reopen the app
  • Or reload the page inside the app

Uninstalling

Desktop (Chrome/Edge/Brave):

  1. Open the installed Oplinque app
  2. Click the three-dot menu (⋮) in the app window
  3. Select "Uninstall Oplinque..."
  4. Confirm

Desktop (macOS Safari):

  • Drag the app from Dock to Trash
  • Or right-click → Remove from Dock

Android:

  • Long-press the Oplinque icon
  • Tap "App info" or "Uninstall"
  • Confirm

iOS:

  • Long-press the Oplinque icon
  • Tap "Remove App"
  • Select "Delete App"
  • Confirm

Troubleshooting

"Install" button doesn't appear

Possible causes:

  • Already installed (check your apps list)
  • Browser doesn't support PWA (try Chrome/Edge)
  • Using private/incognito mode (switch to normal mode)
  • Not on HTTPS (Oplinque is served over HTTPS; install prompts may not appear without it)

Solution:

  • Make sure you're at https://oplinque.com (not HTTP)
  • Use Chrome, Edge, Brave, or Safari
  • Close incognito mode and use a regular browser window
  • Try the menu option: Menu → Apps → Install Oplinque

App doesn't work offline

Check:

  • The app must be installed (not just bookmarked)
  • You must have opened it at least once while online
  • Service worker must be registered (normally automatic)

Solution:

  • Reinstall the app
  • Open it while online, browse a few pages
  • Then try offline mode

App doesn't receive notifications

Enable notifications:

  • Desktop: App menu → Settings → Notifications → Allow
  • Android: Long-press app icon → App info → Notifications → Enable
  • iOS: Settings → Oplinque → Notifications → Allow

In-app:

  • Go to Settings → Notifications in Oplinque
  • Enable desired notification types
  • Test with a reminder

App looks different from website

This is normal! The PWA version:

  • Runs in full screen (no browser UI)
  • Has its own window/app container
  • May have slightly different performance
  • Uses native app conventions

Both versions have the same features and sync your data.

  • Use the installed version instead of browser
  • Enable background sync for seamless data updates
  • Allow notifications for timely reminders
